What is Ski Touring ? 

Ski touring is a unique experience that allows you to discover the untouched terrains beyond the ski zone! Why not climb and ride down from the highest peak on the Balkans? Try out our ski touring adventures with a professional guide in the alpine zone of the beautiful Rila mountain. We offer a variety of ski touring routes with 4 different levels of difficulty, which we will adapt to your experience and ability, as well as to the current snow and weather conditions. 

SKI TOURING ROUTES DIFFICULTY LEVELS

Level 1 Easy This level is suitable for ski touring beginners, who want to experience this amazing adventure. Don't forget that you must be at least an average skier. The tours are between 1 to 4 hours long. Ski touring equipment is not required. The routes in this category are not dependent on the weather conditions.  

Level 2 Medium This category is suitable for experienced skiers, familiar with ski touring.  Experience is ski touring is a must, as well as having your own ski touring equipment. The tours are between 4 and 6 hours long.  

Level 3 Difficult  This category is suitable for really good skiers with good experience in ski touring. The tours can often take between 6 and 8 hours.  

Level  4 Experts only  Similar to Lever 3, this category is only suitable for excellent skiers with good experience in ski touring.  The physical intensity is higher and the duration of the tours can exceed 11 hours.  

The exact duration of each tour depends on the group size and abilities, on the chosen routes and the snow and weather conditions.

Route 1 - Borovets - Gondola lift Yastrebets - Musala lodge - Musala peak (2925m) - Marichini lakes - Maritza lodge - Borovets

Level 4: Experts only

Climbing to the highest peak in Bulgaria and one the Balkan peninsula - peak Musala. Intense and beautiful uphill skiing, following the line of the winter marking.  The final meters before Musala peak require taking off the skis and walking along a safe rock edge. After reaching Musala peak, the route continues towards the Marichini lakes valley. Next comes a long and scenic downhill ride, passing Maritsa lodge, followed by walking with bindings until the Black rock and returning from there to Borovets. This route is suitable for people with good ski touring experience.

Average uphill skiing duration: 4 -5 hours
Average downhill skiing duration: 4 - 6 hours

Route 2 - Borovets - Gondola Lift Yastrebets - Musala Lodge - Musala Peak (2925m) - Musala Lodge - Borovets

Level 3: Difficult 

Climbing the highest peak in Bulgaria and on the Balkan peninsula - Musala - 2925. Beautiful and technical uphill skiing towards peak Musala. The return is on Musala pathway.

Average uphill skiing duration: 3 hours
Average downhill skiing duration:  2 - 3 hours

Route 3 - Borovets Adventure Center - Musala Lodge - Borovets Adventure Center

Level 2: Medium 

This route is suitable for ski touring beginners who want to make their first steps in uphill skiing.  The route is easy and follows a groomed ski way to Musala lodge and skiing back downhill. The altitude increases gradually and the route doesn't depend on the snow and weather conditions.

Average tour duration: 4 -5 hours
Average uphill skiing duration: 4 hours
Average downhill skiing duration:  30min. - 1 hour

Route 4 - Borovets Adventure center - Sitnyakovo rock - Borovets Adventure center

Level 1: Easy 

This route is suitable for everyone who wants to try out climbing uphill in off-piste terrain and ski downhill on the ski zone slopes. The uphill line follows a steep forest pathway reaching to the panoramic view from Sitnyakovo rock and finishes in the upper station of Sitnyakovo lift. From there the downhill skiing continues on a groomed slope.

Average uphill skiing duration: 1:30 hours
Average downhill skiing duration: 20 min.

Route 5 - Peaks of Musala circus - Borovets - Gondola lift Yastrebets - Musala lodge - peak Irechek - Musala lodge - Borovets

Level 3: Difficult 

Panoramic climbing on one of the mountain ridges that surround the the valley of Musala lodge and end  in peak Irechek 2852m. The route required previous ski touring experience and offers beautiful uphill and downhill rides. Depending on the snow conditions, walking in ski boots may be required on the ridge before peak Irechek.

Average uphill skiing duration: 3 - 3:30 hours
Average downhill skiing duration:  2:30 - 3 hours

Route 6 - Borovets Adventure center - the Black rock - Sitnyakovo ski run

Level 3: Difficult 

The route is suitable for experienced skiers with strong physical ability who want to try out the uphill skiing technique, combined with a visit to the Black rock. The route then continues with walking with skins  in mountain ridge area and finishes with a relaxed and familiar skiing down on Sitnyakovo ski run.

Level 2: Medium 

Pleasant route, worth choosing. Not too demanding but surely offering beautiful panoramic views.

Average uphill skiing duration: 3 - 4 hours
Average downhill skiing duration:  1- 2 hours

Route 2 - Borovets - CMS Malyovitsa - Malyovitsa lodge - peak Malyovitsa - CMS Malyovitsa - Borovets

Level 3: Difficult

One-day adventure with climb to the highest peak in the area - peak Malyovitsa 2729m. This tour winds through the beautiful Malyovitsa valley and takes us to right to the peak - one of the most beautiful peaks in Rila mountain. This route offers a lot of ski emotions and breathtaking scenery.

Average uphill skiing duration: 5 - 6 hours
Average downhill skiing duration: 2 hours

Route 3 - Borovets - CMS Malyovitsa - Rujdavitsa - Kamilata peak - Malyovitsa lodge - Second terrace - Malyovitsa peak - lodge Malyovitsa - Borovets

Level 4: Experts only 

A serious route suitable for well prepared ski touring fans. This is a one-day tour featuring several peaks and ridges, combined with beautiful downhill rides and breathtaking views from the most alpine part of Rila mountain. The route includes climbing peak Malyovitsa 2729m. 

Average tour duration: 8 -10 hours
Average uphill skiing duration: 6 - 7 hours
Average downhill skiing duration: 3 hours
